Geriatric Nursing Department

This department integrated in the Community Health Nursing Department as a distinct MSN field at graduate level of nursing disciplines and has begun to train MSc students since 2016 in the school of nursing and midwifery. The curriculum was first introduced in … as a Master of Nursing Sciences.  This department is a subgroup of Community Health nursing. Gerontological nursing is the specialty of nursing pertaining to older adults. Gerontological nurses work in collaboration with older adults, their families, and communities to support healthy aging, maximum functioning, and quality of life. Graduate Degree (MSc) Geriatric Nursing train nurses who are important advocates for overseeing the appropriate utilization of healthcare resources geared to the needs of elderly people. They also provide essential educational services to older clients, their families and other nursing and medical professionals involved in elderly care. Geriatric nurses are expected to be skilled in patient care, treatment planning, education, mental health, and rehabilitation.

The healthy human is the axis of sustainable development, so the right to health is respected by all human beings, including elderlies.

The elders and their families are the originality of this program, so observing their dignity and health needs is essential in providing our educational plans and research project through Community based education and service learning activities.

Compliance with professional ethics and social justice is essential in providing counseling, education and multi-dimensional (bio-psycho-socio- cultural spiritual) care and services to elderly clients.

Improving nurses’ clinical knowledge and skills in the field of aging issues in accordance with acceptable global and regional standard.

Training   knowledgeable  and skillful students in the field of Gerontological Nursing and educating informed, efficient, committed, responsible, and accountable nurses and nurse-managers with enough skills to synthesis Knowledge and practice of nursing with other health professionals through health education and evidence-based solution for elderly groups, families and individuals in different community-based services.

 Updating the knowledge and skills of nurses in the field of aging with continuing education

Integrating theory and practice through interdisciplinary cooperation in the regional, national or international projects in order to improve the quality of health services for special needs of the elderly population. Proposing applied research idea contributes to health education and nursing interventions for promoting geriatric families’ quality of life, and elders' health and well-being.

To promote support and care for elders with special incapacities and protect the health of senior population;

To enhance community-based nursing care for elder patients and their families through training graduate students acquainted with the health care system and medical services for elders;

To develop different community-based settings for delivering nursing care for the older adults;

To improve the quality of health care services for elderly clients and their families;

To develop policies and regulations for improving knowledge and capabilities of the elderly and family counselors for better participation in the society.
