About Immunology Department

Teaching activities for undergraduate students, the first postgraduate students for MSc program in Immunology had been admitted in 1999. After admission of 3 rounds of Masters Degree program, the first PhD students were admitted to this group in 2005, and the process of admission of postgraduate students has been going on ever since. The general immunology and serology laboratory is equipped for medical as well as dentistry and other students in different fields of education.

The Department of Immunology is one of the most prominent departments of basic sciences in the Faculty of Medicine and has a history of about 50 years. The Immunology Department had been working as the pathobiology department until 1991, together with the bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology groups. Since that year, the Department of Immunology started working as an independent group at the Isfahan Medical School.

Missions:

  1. Considering the increased number of postgraduate students and based on the progress of the scope of knowledge and research in immunology, the Department of Immunology experienced a palpable re-construction and renovation of premises, spaces and equipments.

  2. Teaching activities of group professors:
  1. Teaching immunology courses in the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and International University Campus in all undergraduate, general and specialized doctorate degrees.
  2. Teaching Immunology Courses in Undergraduate, Nutrition, Nursing and Midwifery Faculty
  3.  Teaching postgraduate courses in Immunology and PhD courses in all departments of medical school
  4. Some combination courses (virtual-in-person) for medical, dental, pharmacy and laboratory science students
  1.  Educational goals:
  1. Developing immunological knowledge and acquiring new technologies in this field
  2. To provide higher quality educational units with standard methods to undergraduate, postgraduate, general and specialized doctorate and PhD students in various fields of medical sciences
  3. To train the expert and efficient human resources to provide educational, research and medical services to scientific and health centers throughout the country
  4. Admitting international students from other countries to expand educational goals to world-class standards
  1. Research Objectives:
  1. Designing and launching fundamental and applied research projects to develop immunology knowledge and achieve new findings
  2. Trying to make research projects more practical
  3. Attempts to manufacture and deliver immunological technology products in order to reduce dependency of the country
  4. Work in coordination with physicians and respected clinical faculty members to develop immunotherapy methods to improve the treatment of various diseases including allergies, cancers and autoimmune diseases (MS)
  5. Conducting fundamental and applied researches in various fields of biological sciences
  6. Providing more laboratory research and diagnostic services

Currently, the group has 8 faculty members (2 professors - 2 associate professors and 4 assistant professors) and 2 postgraduates responsible for labs and practical classes, and one BSc in charge of the group's office.

In the academic year of 2019-20, the number of current MSc and PhD students in the group is 22 and 19, respectively. The Department of Immunology teaches the practical and theoretical courses of Immunology in all sections and disciplines at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. Also providing educational and research services to postgraduate students (Masters and Ph.D.) in immunology and other fields as well as specialized and sub-specialty degrees are of other activities of this group.

The faculty members, while providing guidance and consulting theses in PhD, master's, general and specialized doctorate degrees, have also submitted numerous free research projects. Some of these projects are in collaboration with other research centers and Universities in the country and some have been implemented in the form of international projects. The group is also working closely with research centers on cancer prevention, neuroscience, and immunodeficiency diseases, and has been conducting researches related to clinical practice.

The patent of some inventions and construction of nanobody, ScFv, laboratory kits, genetically manipulated stem cells and CAR-NK cell production have recently introduced the group into a new field of scientific activity and development that is hoped to get more honors with the respect and support of the authorities. In addition to educational and research activities, the Immunology Department also plays a role in providing health services to patients and the Immunology and Transplantation Laboratory of Noor and Ali Asghar Hospital is run by the faculties of this group.

In terms of research facilities, the group has been equipped with a RT- PCR machine, a Co2 incubator and three Class II hood cabinets, a flow cytometer, FPLC, Gradient termocycler, Gel documenter, vertical and horizontal electrophoresis equipments, inverted microscope, fluorescent microscope, and 20 light microscopes.

It has gradually been able to meet many of the lab and research needs of the students and researchers of itself and other groups. The general immunology and serology laboratory is equipped for medical as well as dentistry and other students in different fields of education.   Among the basic research infrastructures provided at this time in the group, the set of specialized molecular, proteins, flow cytometry and cell culture laboratories, and laboratory facilities as well as a classroom and a space suitable for postgraduate students equipped by computer network would be available.
